Recovery of Misallocated Funds
Azam Nazir Tarar elaborated that while Rs. 140 million had been misdistributed, the government managed to recover a significant portion of these funds. He revealed that more than Rs. 70 million has already been returned, and actions have been taken to address financial embezzlement within the program. The law minister also highlighted that the program has been handling a massive budget of Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 1,400 billion, and the proportion of misallocated funds is relatively small compared to the total amount disbursed.
Efforts for Improved Accountability
The government has pledged to improve transparency and accountability within the BISP to ensure that such issues do not arise in the future. While the financial mismanagement of Rs. 140 million may seem minimal in the context of the program’s overall budget, it has raised concerns about operational efficiency and the need for robust oversight mechanisms in public welfare schemes.
This development calls for vigilance in managing public funds to maintain public trust in essential welfare programs like the Benazir Income Support Program.
